Scoring Americana Virtual Presentation
September 17 @ 10:30 am - 11:30 amFree
Composer/Guitarist: Emile Menasche
How do music and film come together? And how do composers choose which instruments to use in their soundtracks? How does the instrument used for melody or theme affect its emotional impact?
These are the themes we’ll explore in Scoring Americana, a virtual presentation by composer/guitarist Emile Menasché.
Emile has been creating soundtracks for the Barrier Islands Center documentary series for more than a decade. The films, directed by award-winning documentarian James Spione, explore many different subjects, but they’re bound together by the beauty and humanity that define life on the Eastern Shore.
A composer’s job is to bring viewers closer to the people, places, and events onscreen. To accomplish this for the BIC series, Emile relies most heavily on what he calls “instruments of Americana”—acoustic guitar, Dobro, fiddle, and occasionally, mandolin and banjo.
The presentation will focus on the creative aspects his scoring method, explaining both the creative and technical aspects of recording acoustic instruments for film music. Emile will perform excerpts of music used in the production, demonstrate of some of the recording techniques he uses to enhance the sound of the instruments, and explain how he works in collaboration with Spione to bring the final soundtrack to life.
In addition, Emile will offer a brief rundown of each instrument’s history in American culture and explain why he believes they continue to make an emotional connection with listeners—and himself.
