The Impact Center: Grand Opening

Celebrate the grand opening of The Impact Center on Martin Luther King Day!
The Impact Center resides in and pays homage to former Cape Charles Elementary – a Washington-Rosenwald School built in 1928 to educate African American youth in Cape Charles during legalized segregation. The school taught children grades 1-7 until its closure in 1966. The space was then used for about a decade by a seafood processing plant. Since 1977, the building has been vacant.
Upon its rehabilitation, the school will serve as a hub for community engagement. Its multi-use spaces will allow residents and visitors points of recreation, architecture, history, programming, gathering, and collaboration.
We hope you’ll join us in welcoming this terrific new addition to our community.
Grand Opening Agenda:
10:30 AM: Ribbon Cutting
11:00 AM: Main Stage Program – performances by local musicians and speeches from community leaders, including a keynote address by Dr. Daryl Minus, President of Eastern Shore Community College. Limited seating – register online.
12:00 PM: Open House – featuring Cape Charles Elementary alumni, the College of William & Mary’s Public Policy Program, and genealogists from the Gabriel Jacobs Eastern Shore People of Color (EPOCH) Initiative.
